Argentum Backup

A simple effective backup package

This program was available as a freebie if you purchased Australian PC User, March 2003 Edition.

I like it because it creates the simplest zip files from which data may be extracted on almost any PC. If you want a copy, click on this link Argentum Backup v 1.5

Install this package by choosing the Run option. It will place a copy of Argentum in C:\Downloads and create C:\Backup. Open the Serial No.txt file in C:\Downloads\Argentum. Follow the suggestions.

Run Argentum and choose the About tab. Click on Register and enter the code. You could copy and paste the code but don’t copy any extra spaces at the end of the code.
Next, choose
Options. Set the page as below but do not Enable Stacking.

Click on Apply or your setting will not be saved. If you enable stacking, multiple copies of your backup will mount up and these will need to be managed.

Next, click on the Tasks tab. Note the three templates with My Documents highlighted.

Click Edit and note that the whole My Documents folder is selected.

Click New Folder

Now navigate.

To select a folder, click on the + symbol to the left of My Documents.

Choose the folder you want to backup. Click OK.

It has been added to the list of folders. Now Remove the My Documents folder entry.

From here on you can follow the dialog, adding and removing folders, leaving a list of sub-folders to be backed up. Continue the dialog clicking Next and so on.

The following diagram shows a New option which enables you to create extra templates as you require.

Click New

Click the pull-down to reveal the options.

Choose Custom.

Give the Template a name.

Note the considerable filtering that can be applied to the file selection.

Note the use of the wild cards ? and *, and the - sign for exceptions.

From this point you are on you own.

Experiment.
